What Does the Bible Say About Suicide?

The short answer: The Bible never hides human despair — Elijah, David, and Job all asked God to let them die, and God met them with presence, not condemnation. Scripture's word to the brokenhearted is nearness: "The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart" (Psalm 34:18). If you're in that dark place, please don't walk through it alone.
"The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit."
"But he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree: and he requested for himself that he might die; and said, It is enough; now, O LORD, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers."
"Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God."
"Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest."
"For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord."
"For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end."
A gentle note
The Bible records several deaths by suicide (Saul, Ahithophel, Judas) without turning them into theological verdicts on every person who dies this way. What Scripture emphasizes, overwhelmingly, is God's compassion toward the despairing — and His desire that we choose life, reach out, and let others help carry what feels unbearable. Faith and professional help belong together here.
