What does the Bible say about anxiety?

The short answer: The Bible doesn’t shame anxious people — it speaks to them directly. Again and again, Scripture pairs the command “do not be afraid” with a reason: God is present, He cares, and He invites you to hand Him what you’re carrying through prayer. Anxiety isn’t treated as a lack of faith; it’s treated as a burden you were never meant to carry alone.

Philippians 4:6–7KJV
“Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”
What this meansPaul’s alternative to anxiety isn’t “try harder” — it’s prayer with thanksgiving. Name the specific worry to God, and peace is promised as a guard over your heart and mind.
1 Peter 5:7KJV
“Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.”
What this means“Casting” is active — like throwing a weight off your shoulders. The reason given isn’t your strength; it’s God’s care for you personally.
Matthew 6:34KJV
“Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.”
What this meansJesus narrows the horizon to today. Most anxiety lives in an imagined tomorrow; this verse calls you back to the day you’re actually in.
John 14:27KJV
“Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”
What this meansSpoken the night before the cross, Jesus gives peace as a gift — not the fragile calm the world offers, but His own. It’s received, not earned.
Isaiah 41:10KJV
“Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.”
What this meansFive promises in one verse: presence, relationship, strength, help, and being upheld. The antidote to fear here is not information — it’s companionship.
Psalm 94:19KJV
“In the multitude of my thoughts within me thy comforts delight my soul.”
What this meansThe psalmist knows the spiral of racing thoughts. God’s comforts don’t just quiet them — they “delight” the soul, replacing dread with something better.
