What Does the Bible Say About Infertility?

The short answer: The Bible is honest about infertility's pain — Hannah, Sarah, and Elizabeth all lived it, and their stories don't rush past the grief. It shows God hearing those anguished prayers, and it never treats childlessness as a measure of worth. But it also doesn't promise every story ends the same way; honest faith leaves room for grief alongside hope.

1 Samuel 1:10KJV
"And she was in bitterness of soul, and prayed unto the LORD, and wept sore."
What this meansScripture doesn't sanitize Hannah's pain — it records her weeping as prayer. Tears in God's direction count as faith.
Psalm 113:9KJV
"He maketh the barren woman to keep house, and to be a joyful mother of children. Praise ye the LORD."
What this meansGod sees this specific longing and honors it. The Bible names barrenness openly rather than treating it as unspeakable.
Genesis 21:1–2KJV
"And the LORD visited Sarah as he had said, and the LORD did unto Sarah as he had spoken. For Sarah conceived, and bare Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time of which God had spoken to him."
What this meansAfter decades of waiting, Sarah's story turned. God's timing rarely matches ours — but His promises don't expire.
Luke 1:25KJV
"Thus hath the Lord dealt with me in the days wherein he looked on me, to take away my reproach among men."
What this meansElizabeth speaking after conceiving John the Baptist. In her world, childlessness carried public shame — and God lifted it personally, tenderly.
Psalm 127:3KJV
"Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward."
What this meansChildren are described as a gift — which also means their absence is not a verdict on your worth, your faith, or your future.
Romans 8:28KJV
"And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose."
What this meansNot "everything will go as you hoped" — but nothing, including this particular pain, is wasted in God's hands.
