What Does the Bible Say About Dementia and Alzheimer's?
The short answer: The Bible doesn't name dementia, but it dignifies old age and promises God's carrying presence "even to hoar hairs" (Isaiah 46:4). A person's worth in God's eyes was never measured by memory or mental sharpness — and 2 Corinthians 4:16 says the inner person is renewed even as the outer fades. For caregivers walking this exhausting road: honoring aging parents is a commandment, and God sees that hidden work.
Isaiah 46:4KJV
"And even to your old age I am he; and even to hoar hairs will I carry you: I have made, and I will bear; even I will carry, and will deliver you."
What this meansWhen they can't remember Him, He remembers them. God's carrying doesn't expire when memory does.
Psalm 71:9KJV
"Cast me not off in the time of old age; forsake me not when my strength faileth."
What this meansIt's okay to pray this — for yourself, or for a parent slipping away. Scripture gives words to the fear of being forgotten.
2 Corinthians 4:16KJV
"For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day."
What this meansBody and mind may fade, but the person God is renewing does not. Dementia touches the outer person; it doesn't erase the inner one He loves.
Proverbs 16:31KJV
"The hoary head is a crown of glory, if it be found in the way of righteousness."
What this meansGray hair as glory, not embarrassment. A long life — even a fading one — carries dignity in God's eyes.
Psalm 92:14KJV
"They shall still bring forth fruit in old age; they shall be fat and flourishing;"
What this meansFruitfulness isn't over. A person's value to God and to others doesn't end when their productive years do.
Exodus 20:12KJV
"Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee."
What this meansFor the caregiver: this exhausting, often invisible work of showing up, feeding, sitting, and loving is obedience that God honors.
